Abstract:This paper was to investigate the causes of preoperative malnutrition, diagnosis and the relationship between malnutrition and prognosis of gastric cancer, in order to provide guide for clinicians for the diagnosis of malnutrition and improve clinical outcome in patients with gastric cancer. Key words such as “gastric cancer” and “malnutrition” were reviewed in CNKI and Pubmed databases. The definition and diagnosis of preoperative malnutrition in patients with gastric cancer, the causes of preoperative malnutrition in patients with gastric cancer, the relationship between malnutrition and the prognosis of patients, and the value in the clinical application of enhanced recovery after surgery were summarized. The results suggested that, firstly, patients with gastric cancer could be diagnosed by nutritional screening, nutritional assessment, and comprehensive measurement aimed to carry out nutritional therapy. Secondly, the reduction of energy intake, absorption and utilization, the increase of inflammatory and stress levels and metabolic disorders were the main causes of preoperative malnutrition in patients with gastric cancer, and malnutrition was the prognostic factor of patients. It was great significance to improve the clinical prognosis by combining nutritional screening with nutritional assessment to diagnose malnutrition and evaluate the degree for the sake of nutritional therapy effectively and promptly which could not only reduce the incidence of postoperative complications and hospitalization costs, but also shorten the total length of hospital stay and postoperative hospital stay.
